I get excited about pop-ups. (You know who does great pop-ups? Celadon.) Maybe I'm going to look for a sofa, but then there are candles and earrings and handmade floor tiles. I'm an anthropologist so I crave souks. I was thrilled when Erick Holmberk and Jess Nichols of J. Stark asked me to be part of their Black Friday pop-up. I thought the work looked right at home with their bags.
I have to tell you that they didn't take a commission - they just wanted to showcase local artists. That kind of spirit is alive and well in Charleston, and it's one of the reasons I am so proud to live here.
I came down with a cold on Thanksgiving so I couldn't hang out that weekend (and I missed the Turkey Trot!), but it was a great event. If you don't know Eric's story about how he started J. Stark, it's inspiring. Read it.
